Africa Fashion Week London is Europe’s largest event for African and African-inspired fashion. It also promotes ethical fashion production in the African fashion industry and welcomes designers of African-inspired fashion that are working ethically and sustainably.
MIA by Mia Nisbet fuses recycled fabrics and traditional Malawian textiles to produce a collection that combines the richness of African textiles with Western styling. Profits are reinvested in communities in Malawi and the brand won the prestigious Make Your Mark award in Fashion Award 2008 for ethical fashion design during London Fashion Week as well as the Ethical Fashion Forum Innovation Award 2009.
Njema Helena is a brand that strives to create modern fashion with an African aesthetic for everyday life. The collection is designed by Cecilia Ostman, who graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and has designed for international fashion labels including Ralph Lauren. Njema Helena source and produce exclusively in Kenya, encouraging local trade and employment, as well as providing training and growth opportunities for the company’s dressmakers.
Many more designers are set to showcase their ethically produced clothing and accessories at Africa Fashion Week London, the most exciting fashion event taking place in the capital this summer. For more information on individual designers please contact [email protected].
